I'm Turning 65
You may become eligible for Medicare at age 65, and you do not want to delay enrolling, as that could result in surprising penalties.
What should you do now? Think 3 months!
If you are receiving Social Security retirement benefits or Railroad Retirement benefits, you should be automatically enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B. Check your mail! You need not enroll in these and should receive a letter and your card in the mail about three months before your 65th birthday.
If you are not receiving Social Security retirement benefits or Railroad Retirement benefits, you will need to enroll by contacting Social Security.
If you're eligible for Medicare when you turn 65, you can sign up during the 7-month period that:
- Begins 3 months before the month you turn 65
- Includes the month you turn 65
- Ends 3 months after the month you turn 65
We can assist you with these steps if you have questions. You don't want to delay and miss important deadlines.
Some eligible people turn down Part B (outpatient doctor coverage) because they are still working or still covered by an employer’s plan, or are on their spouse’s coverage, or similar.
Am I Required to Get Medicare?
Medicare is not required, but if you decide not to enroll at age 65 and do not qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, this could be costly. Medicare Parts A, B and D all have late enrollment penalties, and these can quickly add up.
Think carefully and know all your options if you are considering not enrolling in Medicare. It’s usually a good idea to enroll at age 65 if you do not qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
